The entertainment for many would be the valve radio with an aerial taken to water or gas pipe. The power, from a 15 Amp Bakelite power outlet, in all probability the only one in the room, and often fitted with an adaptor. The Evening Post once read by many awaiting to re read. |The only obvious visual contribution, being the reflection in the mirror, a well lived room so will would have been familiar with in older housing, poor ventilation despite often man draughts. the wall mounted conduit part of the change from Gas to Electricity lighting and bring electricity to many homes.

The chair by the fireside, the electricity meter, for many prepaid with shillings but there were some remaining in the 1960's for 1d. The water stained chimney breast, caused by rain but so too bringing deposits of soot to the hearth. The task of black leading also returns to mind. (Paul Key)
Once common sights, the Grandfather clock folding gate table, the cob web brush? A Paraffin light for those trips to the "privy" in the dark of night. The fireplace screen. the mirror so frequently positioned over the fireplace and on occasion the cause of so much pain. signs of aging and time served housing stock, well recorded by Peter.
